Latest roster projection

“This could be a lot more — uh, complex! I mean, it’s not just, it might not be such a simple… uh… you know? … I’ve got information, man! New [stuff] has come to light!”

Sometimes the Dude just says it so much better than I can. So with that intro, here’s the newest roster projection, following the cuts the last two days. Except for starting pitchers, in each case they are listed from the guy I am most sure will be on the team down to the guy I am least sure.

Starting Pitchers (5)
Adam Wainwright
Kyle Lohse
Todd Wellemeyer
Chris Carpenter
Joel Pineiro

Relief Pitchers (7)
Ryan Franklin
Dennys Reyes
Trever Miller
Kyle McClellan
Jason Motte
Josh Kinney
Brad Thompson

Catchers (2)
Yadier Molina
Jason LaRue

Infielders (6)
Albert Pujols
Khalil Greene
Skip Schumaker
Joe Thurston
Brendan Ryan
David Freese

Outfielders (5)
Rick Ankiel
Ryan Ludwick
Chris Duncan
Colby Rasmus
Joe Mather

There really aren’t many questions left at this point. One is right side of the bullpen. Looks like three guys for two spots — Perez, Kinney and Thompson. Even more specifically, I think it’s Thompson vs Perez for one spot. I still think they’re going to take Thompson, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

One is Mather. If he’s on, at this point I think he’s on as an outfielder and they take six infielders. Another possibility is to send him down and go with seven infielders, with the knowledge that Ryan and Thurston would play some infield. Ultimately I think that competition comes down to Mather vs Barden. But I’m also not certain that Barden is in third place versus Ryan and Thurston. More broadly, and probably more accurately, it looks like four guys for three spots: Ryan, Thurston, Barden and Mather.

I have a very difficult time right now seeing this roster without Rasmus on it.

Thanks Matthew. The 3B wrinkle certainly makes things look different, but I’m with you. I think the time is now for Razzle.

Agree with your current roster projections with exception of the bullpen. Lil Mac and Thompson need to show more, poor recent outings after a mediocre 08 will not be savored by TLR. Walters has looked good this spring, he and others deserve a shot if these 2 fail to improve.

Remember, this is not about who I think deserves it or who I would put on there — it’s what I expect the roster will be.

Do you think Thurston will play a full season with the big boys, or he is more of a veteran replacement until Glaus returns? Also, if Freese can step up and play at a high level, what are the odds of dealing Glaus to free up salary and that position?
Thanks for all the great info Matt, I can’t wait til Opening Day!

Please God, let’s stop the name “Razzle” right now. Would rather have Perez, if healthy, any day over Thompson… unless it’s a blowout in the 4th and we need a guy to eat up innings. Bottom line is someone is going to get hurt, and that’s when you bring up Thompson.

I agree with Perez over Thompson, but this might be one of those “path of least resistance” scenarios where Perez is younger with more options and more sharpening to do than Brad. I think the rest of the NL Central is hoping Tony takes this path as well…

Oh yeah, and Razzle is on top of my list of names NOT to give the kid. If he performs in the bigs he’ll earn himself a nickname, until then, in my book, he’s just the kid.

First off, nice going with The Big Lebowski quotes!Who do you see as the Opening Day starter at third, given your current projection? Do you think TLR would go with Freese or someone more experienced like Ryan?

Personally, I like Mather at 3B. I know he has been slumping, but hasn’t his D been surprisingly good? And, while his ave is down, he has been a timely hitter with good RBI production. Guess I just like Joey Bombs. Hope he gets a chance to stay with the club!

Hello Mr. Leach,

Do you think TLR is going to keep Carpenter on a strict pitch count all season long? I would assume so but wanted to get your opinion.

Thanks.

It kind of becomes more clear when you can throw Rasmus on the roster. I am glad that that situation is pretty much resolved. McClellan and Thompson? I would rather have McClellan, but I am still not sold on him. I think we overused him last year, especially early on. What about Freese at 3B? I thought that was the hot topic as of yesterday. My main concern is that, the 3B issue. Mather looked great early on. I am not sure if it was complacency, but he certain fell off. We need someone to step up big there.

Based on everything I’ve read, I don’t think the question is Perez or Thompson. The question is Perez or Kinney. Thompson is going to find a spot on the team because of his ability to pick up long relief innings and take a spot start.
Pitchers Hit Eighth

Yeah I also wondered about who would pick up the long relief duties if Thompson got sent down (as some speculated), but what PitchersHitEighth said makes a lot more sense.

As for the 3B issue, I really like Mather too, but from what Mr. Leach has said it sounds like he is not going to figure in prominently at that position this year. The fact that Glaus’ return date is already starting to get pushed back keeps increasing the importance of finding a viable solution for the hot corner. Counting down the days, hope everyone is as excited as I am!

This is my first time pay a visit at here and
i am truly happy to read everthing at one place.

excellent issues altogether, you simply received a new reader.
