Tuesday hot stove tidbits: Glaus, DeRosa, McGwire, LaRue

I have a story going up on StLCardinals.com shortly with a look at the Holliday situation, the starting rotation, and a couple of other matters, but plenty of other tidbits came from my afternoon chat with John Mozeliak, as well as some other sources, today.

* Mozeliak pretty much ruled out the possibility of Troy Glaus returning to play 3B for the Cardinals in 2010. Glaus is just too big of a question mark, healthwise, to rely on to play 3B all year.

* My friend and colleague Todd Zolecki, who writes for Phillies.com and maintains The Zo Zone, spoke with a representative for Mark DeRosa’s agents and was told that DeRosa’s surgery went well. According to Dr. Gary Lourie, who performed the operation, the surgery was completed “with no complications,” and the doctor expects “full baseball activities well before baseball season begins.”

* There’s nothing new to report on Mark McGwire.

* This was one I found a tad curious. I asked Mozeliak if there was anything to be read into the fact that Jason LaRue has not yet signed, given that the Cardinals often act quickly to re-up their backup catcher.

This was his response: “We would like to see how things develop, and how things unfold. I think there’s a lot of things that could be different this year, and we wanted to take a more patient approach as we put this club together.”

I certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility that someone other than LaRue is the backup catcher in 2010.

* Regarding an upgrade or addition to the right-handed relief corps, here’s what Mozeliak had to say: “I don’t think it’s a priority. But if we thought we could upgrade, we’d consider it.”

* Finally, the Cardinals and all other teams have until Friday to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft by adding them to the 40-man roster. The Cards have some intriguing decisions, and it will be something worth watching.

how do i foind out where brad thompson is going???? if he is>>>

Brad Thompson is with the Royals now. I saw it on a posting on http://www.mlbtraderumors.com

I think the Cards need to think about signing Smoltz and DeRosa before Holliday. Also, try to sign Piniero a 1 year contract to make sure he doesn’t sandbag like 75% of a multi-year contract.

I have no problem with Holliday, but his agent is going to hold the Cards at gun point for a new contract. Especially, if Boston has any interest for him over Bay. He’s just not worth $20 million. Yep, still sour about the fly ball that ended the Cards’ season!

Other than that, I’m happy with the infield positions setup. I take it that K Greene won’t be there next season, correct?

With the outfield though they could get Bay for much less than Holliday. Ankiel more than likely won’t be back next year, which would save some green. Just need another modest HR hitter for LF to plug in before Pujols in the lineup to improve their stats and if that’s Bay, then so be it! Unless, they sign DeRosa and make him a everyday LF, that’d work for me as well.

I’m in the camp that says we need to toughen up that bullpen, Wainwright should’ve had like 25 wins this last season. Not willing to give up on Motte he just needs more experience, that’s all. No hard feelings towards Franklin, he’s just not a closer.

The Cards let Thompson go after years of frustation in St.
Louis,& now they need to concentrate on replacing him in the pen. They SHOULD concentrate on;J.J.Putz(NYM),Kiko
Calero(FLA.),Scott Schoenwies(ARZ.),Mike Gonzales(ATL.),
Joe Bemliel(COL.),John Smoltz(StL.),AND MAYBE add Randy
Wolfe(LA.) to the rotation. There, also, needs to be a real
concerted effort to re-sign DeRosa,Holliday,& MAYBE LaRue.
The Cards’ really NEED DeRosa,& Holliday to help protect Pujols in the middle of the lineup! IF,for some reason, they
can’t re-sign DeRosa,OR Holliday, the they should re-sign Ankiel and let McGwire work with him on improving his hitting prowse!! Go CARDS!!!!!!!!

The Cards’ REALLY NEED to add a lefthander to the start-
ing rotation,AND one more to the bullpen. Miller did a great
job out of the pen,BUT Reyes DIDN’T!! With that in mind it
WOULD behove St.Louis to pick another to help Miller out!!
TLR really NEEDS to start thinking about adding,at least,a
couple of lefties to help out the pitching staff which would make it even better than it is now!! This way, too,IF we were to meet L.A.,OR Philadelphia the lefties could/would
help neutralize their big left-handed hitting “guns”. C’mon
Tony it is the 21st century,so get with the program and a
couple of lefties to the roster!! Go CARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
