Ryan undergoes surgery

General manager John Mozeliak said on Wednesday that Brendan Ryan has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist and will be limited at the start of Spring Training. Ryan is expected to be ready to play by Opening Day.

“He went into the offseason thinking it would go away with rest, and it didn’t,” Mozeliak said. “He ended up having a very benign ‘scope’ done on his wrist. … He’ll be limited at the beginning of camp. He won’t be swinging a bat for three weeks now.”

Didn’t we hear the same “expected to be ready to play by Opening Day” line about Glaus last year? I’ll believe it when I see it…

I was thinking the exact same thing as cardsrul52. In fact this quote:

“He went into the offseason thinking it would go away with rest, and it didn’t,” from Mo sounds an awful lot like “Everybody was hopeful [after the shot] that he could work himself through this,” which is the quote about Glaus made this time last year.

Although it sounds like he’ll be fine, an injury like this is never good. Especially a contact hitter who uses his wrists more than most other players, should keep an eye on the situation because he’s a promising young player.

Just exactly what is a “very benign scope” in the context of wrist surgery? If there isn’t a problem, you don’t have any kind of “scope”. With Ryan, I’m more worried about his throwing than his hitting, seeing as this is his right wrist we’re talking about. This is not good news, no matter what anybody says. I hope we have a better second option than Julio Lugo.

Wow…talk about your surprises huh?…Seems like there is always something that hits us out of the blue…who saw this coming? Anyway I pray for his recovery and healthy return…sure wish he would have had this surgery sooner…I have had the experience/misfortune to break my wrist and let me tell you it took longer than a couple of months to even hold a bat comfortable or even throw a ball without grimacing…I know this isn’t the same as his sugery but I think once you start having wrist problems they usually have a tendency to “hang around” at least from my experience…hopefully not in his case…hopefully (fingers crossed)…Godspeed Ryan!
