Our shortstop players have been less than stellar this year. Do you foresee us dealing for someone from another team or do we have feasible options in our farm club?

@Debby, Theriot had a 20-game hitting streak already this season, and he has been pretty dependable. I think 2nd base is what needs to be upgraded, not shortstop. Jose Reyes from the Mets for the rest of the year sounds good to me. Then, if Pujols leaves, we may be able to at least resign Reyes.

I’ve been concerned about Theriot’s defense. Agreed that 2nd need work. Not sure we can afford Reyes.

Certainly think that optioning Greene was a great idea.

@Matt – did you just say we needed a 2nd base upgrade, not a SS upgrade and then say we should go get Reyes?! Ummm….he’s a shortstop.

@Kevin – yes, because Theriot is capable of playing 2nd. He played 2nd for the Dodgers after being traded last season and did quite well.

I’m glad we finally optioned Greene. I couldn’t see what he added to the team.

This team is not going to make a move for a shortstop. It was established coming into the season that we were going with Theriot, and now we have to live with that. Trading for Reyes is going to cost a lot more than I would like to give up, especially for just a rental. And of course, there’s always the possibility of injury with Reyes.

Of course, Theriot has been injured multiple times this year. Speaking of that, I can’t remember a time when the Cards have had so many on the DL at the same time. Unfortunately 7 out of the 8 currently on it are starters/regular players. It’s actually quite remarkable that they’ve done as well as they have considering the number of injuries.

@Kevin – yes, because Theriot is capable of playing 2nd. He played 2nd for the Dodgers after being traded last season and did quite well.

Though Theriot has always been willing to play whatever position his team needed, he has said over and over that shortstop is his “natural position”; he was happy to come to the Cards in part because he was relieved not to be a second baseman anymore. His numbers are roughly comparable at both positions, but it would take a pretty slick shortstop to constitute a significant middle-infield improvement if Theriot were to move to second.

I knew today would be a good day when I saw that Greene had been sent back to Memphis. The guy is simply not (not now, at least) a major-league-caliber player. I’m mildly sad to lose one of the only legitimate base-stealers on the club, but as they say, you can’t steal first.

I have a question for you. Have you heard any trade rumors about improving the bullpen?

At the beginning of the season, the club straight up told us they were going for a heavy offense at the expense of the defense. Clearly, the errors made by Theriot and Rasmus loom large given this comment. However, I will gladly take their bats – especially now since Albert is out for awhile. Rasmus and Theriot are gonna have to step up and knock a couple good ones (or maybe more than a couple) to keep pace with the Reds and Brewers.

I think maintaining our competitiveness is possible, but either our offense has to improve or our pen needs to improve a lot. We’ve got the guys who can hit, they just need to do their jobs.
