Juan Encarnacion is back in the lineup today, batting fourth and playing RF. He said he’s feeling better, thanks to the rest. Ludwick is in left, Edmonds in center. Aside from Edmonds, there are no LHH in the lineup.
-M, from breezy, sunny, beautiful Wrigley. This should be a fun four days.
Jim Edmonds is in today’s lineup, playing center and batting cleanup. He said he’s feeling much better today.
Ankiel gets a day off, with Dave Bush’s reverse platoon split — Ryan Ludwick is in RIGHT (error corrected). Miles is at second base, batting ninth.
Greetings, all… Your faithful correspondent is back from a little family time (including sitting in the stands to see Anks’ display yesterday — wow).
Adam Kennedy has been placed on the 15-day DL with a torn medial meniscus (that’s in the knee, for those of you who don’t care much for the names of bones and ligaments and whatnot). In his place, Brendan Ryan has been recalled from Memphis. Ryan is starting today at third base, with Rolen taking a previously scheduled day off. Miles is starting at second. Elsewhere in today’s lineup, Ankiel is playing
center, Ludwick left and Encarnacion right.
CORRECTION/UPDATE: Encarnacion has been scratched. So Taguchi is starting in center field and batting fifth, and Rick Ankiel is playing right field and batting second. Ryan Ludwick has moved up from 5th to 4th in the order.
Tyler Johnson has been activated and is available tonight. Mike Maroth has been placed on the disabled list with what the team is calling "left elbow tendinitis." Didn’t see Maroth, so I didn’t get a chance to ask him anything more specific about it.
Joel Pineiro is expected to arrive at the park any time now, and he’s added to the roster tonight. To make room, Skip Schumaker has been optioned to Memphis. Pineiro will throw a bullpen tonight, or so goes the plan, and then he’ll start Saturday. That gets them back to 12 pitchers, which is where they wanted to be — 5 starters and 7 relievers.
TLR was definitely not happy about sending Schumaker out, since Skip has played so well. He said, several times, "We must be a really good team, if we’re sending out such a good player." Schumaker will be back Sept. 1 at the latest, and you can be sure if there’s an opening before that, they’ll look for a way to get him back.
Miles is in at SS and leading off tonight, with the early game tomorrow for Eckstein. Otherwise, the lineup is Looper and 7 regulars at the other seven positions.
With a nod to Bjork, here’s what I know. Per Cards PR, Pineiro is the extent of it. I am honestly very surprised; I really figured they would ship somebody out once they added Pineiro. Don’t know yet whether he’s going to Memphis or straight to STL or what, but I have been told that it’s likely that he’ll start, rather than relieve.
Greetings from Atlanta, which is as close to my beloved hometown as the Major Leagues get during the regular season. It feels a lot like home — even had some sweet tea with lunch today. Good times.
* Rolen is already back from StL. Probably won’t play till Sunday, and possibly not till Tuesday, but we’ll see. He had a shot. He said the shoulder capsule has tightened, but that his labrum looked good on an MRI. Still a fairly open-ended issue, truth be told.
* Edmonds is activated, starting in center field and batting fifth. Andy Cavazos optioned, so for a day or two or four they’re down to 11 pitchers.
* Still, still, still waiting on Carp announcement.
-M, digging FM 92.9 here in Atlanta.
Here’s a quick update on the Cardinals’ Division Series roster. I’ll have much more in my notebook, which will be on the site shortly after the game starts.
Position players: C Yadier Molina, 1B Albert Pujols, 2B Mark Grudzielanek, SS David Eckstein, IF Abraham Nunez, OF Reggie Sanders, OF Jim Edmonds, OF Larry Walker, C Einar Diaz, IF/OF Hector Luna, IF/OF John Mabry, OF John Gall, OF So Taguchi, OF John Rodriguez. Scott Seabol and Skip Schumaker are not on the roster.
Pitchers: Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Matt Morris, Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis, Randy Flores, Ray King, Jason Isringhausen, Julian Tavarez, Cal Eldred, Brad Thompson. Marquis is listed as a bullpen option for today. Suppan threw a side session yesterday and was not listed on the lineup card as a reliever for this game.
I’ll have more details on this in my notebook, which will be on the site in a couple of hours, but here’s the nuts and bolts. Dave Duncan’s suspension has been cut from four games to two after a telephone hearing with John McHale of Major League Baseball yesterday. Duncan will not be in uniform tonight, though he’s eligible to participate in pregame activities. Since he already served one game of the suspension, he’ll be back in uniform tomorrow.
Just a quick update, and I’ll have a full story on it when my notebook goes live in a while. Mark Mulder is not starting today’s game for the Cards, though he’s making progress. He’ll just be bumped back to his regular next turn, probably Friday in Houston. Cal Eldred gets the ball, and according to Dave Duncan, the decision to go with Eldred over Brad Thompson came down to Major League starting experience more than anything. Thompson is expected to pitch in the game.
